The Game of Life was established on September 13, 1999.

The Game of Life aims to organize projects in the field of spatial representation in electronic music.

With our programming we bring a variety of quality electronic music into the limelight.

We offer composers (in the broadest sense) the opportunity to work with our cell display system Wave Field Synthesis (WFS is the only mobile system in the world). Thus we offer listeners an experience with the current surround sound systems at home not to do.

We are closely involved in the process of creating, producing and programming stages and help where possible to the audience development.

Giant visuals at The Royal Library, Copenhagen, Sep 17 2010

Obscura contributed to this event with the 'projector tree' - an installation of 20 video projectors as well as providing the majority of the visuals throughout this 5 hour programme of music, art and poetry. A lot of the visual material was gathered in the antique collections of the library. The visuals covered a large area of the giant library hall (which is 29 meters from floor to ceiling) and in the eyes of the audience it probably was a totally immersive experience. Balconies and walls became the canvas of ever changing visual themes and the many glass walls became an active part of the installation as they rendered beautiful reflections on other surfaces.

This year, SoundFjord, the UK's first sound art dedicated gallery, brings a fine collection of international sonic art to the Dragonfly cultural programme.

In the centre of idyllic surrounds your ears will deceive you. From the tree's tropical birds shall sing of their home in the Amazon, industrial clanks and groans will ripple across the lake, whilst spectral voices will coo and woo us into their depths; doors will creak and slam where there are no openings, chinks of light will fall on pools of liquid ambience and abstract composition; muttering and laughing, preaching and monologues, all mingle with the instruments on the main stage, and the music of nature itself.

Be sure to follow your ears to the SoundFjord Sound Art Tent, to be found in the open field between the Art Hut and the Bronze-Age Bar.

A project proposal..

I've had a (very technical) project idea in my head for a while + would like to know if anyone is interested in pursuing it with me? I've mentioned it before 2 ppl but don't have a laptop so can't show u how it looks.

The video below is me using sawcutter (a v cool synthesizer). If you see in the top right hand corner, the controller changes the sound in real time. As this has a midi interface I think you could use this via motion tracking - whereby the movements of somebody in a room changes the sound. I've seen someone use this with a theramin (see earlier post). Spatial - audio perception has been done many times before, but it has scope for invention.

You don't have to use this program. Below, I've used the graphical interface for a sketch of the installation. The circle is the person in the room. Basically, the idea is that high tones correspond to space, and low tones correspond to objects. Imagine a large object in the centre, that you are getting nearer and farther away from. All you need here is two audio files playing, and the motion sensor being translated to change the volume of each. Relatively fairly simple.

Hi matt, just 2 let you know I'm still reading the blog! just been busy coz i'm working late shifts..

thanks for that - it's "not my thing" so I wouldn't have looked at it, but I liked it. And in a way it's vaguely similar to the work I'm doing at the moment. Don't you think it's interesting that despite trying to be variant and experimental he still can't get out of the 'old-style' photo colour and the 'old style' furniture etc - which wouldn't have been apparent at the time..

ps. here's something. I just really like the concept - a wooden mirror!

Princess St Meeting 19/11/09

The meeting with Paul McCann was attended by Ady (thanks for getting hold of the projector) Matthew, Ste, Ireena & Katy.

• We showed Paul the temporary work and tried out the position of the projector. There is a lowered ceiling under the mezzanine balcony that can act as a shelf for the projector which would be connected to a laptop which would go on Norman's desk. A mirror would need to be angled in front of the lens and masked to stope any light overspill.

• Paul also showed us the interior spaces that could be used for lighting / projection from the inside onto the windows on the corner of the building (to the right of the entrance as you look at the building from the outside). He is happy for anyone to go into these spaces and work experimentally while the building is open.

[The ground floor has no power yet; First floor is occupied; Second and third floors are empty with power.]

• He can also open up for us on a Saturday if necessary. We discussed Saturday 28th as an installation date.
• The question of additional funding was raised again and Paul suggested we should liaise with Marcus Lord on this.
• The building was used this week as a venue for a Man Met event and has previously been used for showing degree show work.
• Florin later showed us a more elaborate version of the carousel idea that he has been working on.
